The Moors of Saint-Just Megaliths at Cojoux |
|
The fires that ravaged these woods in 1976 and 1987 allowed
for a better appreciation of the importance of the megalithic site of
Saint-Just.
"In its ensemble, it can be compared to the site at Carnac."
(Guide Gallimard). |
Visitors, get out your good walking shoes and be prepared to do some
serious walking. It would be difficult to recommend a specific route to
take. There are a multitude of megaliths and they are spread out over
many miles. The vegetation around most of the stones has been cleared
away and information panels are available for visitors. Though it does
seem logical to want to protect the most beautiful clusters of megaliths
from damage with low guardrails, the presence of cages surrounding certain
rocks here and there is entirely regrettable (you can't even take a photograph.) |
 |
 |
The megaliths at Saint-Just are not exceptional because of their mass
or their height, but more for the way they are arranged. They also differ
from most of the menhirs in the peninsula because they are made of quartz
or schist while the others are generally made of granite.
Don't miss: the locality known as Tréal, with its "covered alley" and
a beautiful view of the whole region. |
| The Moors of Cojoux are located (like the other adjacent sites) around
the town of Saint-Just (35) 12 miles north of Redon going toward Rennes
on route D177 |
