| There
is an old sailor's saying about the island of Ouessant, "Qui voit Ouessant
voit son sang" (He who sees Ouessant sees his own blood). That saying
gave the island a terrifying reputation among sailors and captains. Though
it is surrounded by coral reefs and it does get a good beating every now
and again from some pretty violent storms, the island is really not the
cold, scary place it's made out to be. On the contrary, it's quite a hospitable
little island. It's a nice place to take a bike ride, wandering through
the flower covered paths between Pern
Point and Stiff Bay.
The locals raise sheep and lamb in its salty fields. The lobster and crab
caught at Ouessant are in themselves worth a trip to the island. Near
the Créac'h lighthouse (one of the most powerful in the world), you can
find out more about the thousand year old tradition of hard labor and
"savoir-vivre" on the island at the Maison des Techniques Ouessantines.
There is also an ornithological station nearby.
