At 9 nautical miles from Raz point, stands 59 hectares of land at a little
less than 26 feet above sea level. That pretty much sums up the Ile de
Sein. This piece of rock is certainly the strangest island off the coast
of Brittany. The island is probably the Roman's insula Sena...
In the 1st century, it was known for an oracle of a divinity of the Gauls.
Nine goddesses were sanctified with the vow of perpetual virginity...
The Gauls called them the Sènes...
In
1613, dom Michel was surprised at the relative mediocrity of Christianity
on the island: "... getting on their knees at the new moon and reciting
their Sunday prayers in his honor." Three women, legacies of the
druidesses of yore, were still teaching sun worship. Doue Tad... God the
father!
... much, much later... In 1940, every man left the island for Great Britain
on their boats.
Whipped around by howling winds, the island is one of the hardest
places to live in is Brittany. No trees, no camp sites, (though camping
is tolerated on municipal property)... no cars. A Saint Corentin light
house, fields of heather and wild shores, an isthmus, and a village with
houses built touching one another in order to resist the frequent storms..."
You ABSOLUTELY must visit this place, but shhh, don't say it too loudly!.
