| In order to get a real idea of the wealth possessed by the great Trinidadian
aristocratic families, it's worth your while to visit some of their palaces:
the Palacio Brunet, located on the corner between the church and the calle
Bolivar dates back to the 18th century and paints the most authentic picture
of the golden age of the town. Since 1974, it is home to the Romantic
Museum as this street is also called Calle Simon; the Palacio Cantero,
of neoclassic style and which is home to the municipal history museum;
the Palacio Iznaga on the corner of Minoz and Izquierdo streets…
All these palaces were built to the glory of the local sugar aristocracy.
Many other beautiful homes hidden in the calles Izquierdo, Marquez, Echeri,
Bolivar, Gloria… are just as astonishing to the eyes. All in all, there
are about 50 palaces in Trinidad listed as monuments for their architecture
and furnishings. Some of them have already taken part in a restoration
program introduced by the government. Their hope is to restore Trinidad
to its former architectural glory in order to make it one of the most
important tourist attractions in Cuba.

While the splendor of Trinidad is the result of the great wealth of the
sugar aristocracy who founded the city: the Iznagas, the Borrels, the
Becquers… we had the pleasure of staying in one of the architectural jewels
of the town which was built by a family who made its money in tobacco:
the "crocodile house" as they call it, because inside you will
find a magnificent stuffed specimen of the species. |
The Crocodile House
Located at number 518 on Desengano or Bolivar street - the one to the
right of Iglesia Parroquial de Santisima Trinidad as you leave the Plaza
Mayor - the Crocodile House also known as the Casa del Dominicano dates
back, in fact, to the early 18th century even if it only became famous
when it became the home of Antonio Mauri Seballs, who built his industrial
empire at the end of the 19th century.
