Pireus - Piraièvs |
|
Pireus, the port of Athens, is a strategically important place.
It's from here that tourists leave to go to the Greek Isles. It
is also an intense center of activity, especially in the evening.
|
| Pireus can be broken down into several sections. The first
port is for the ferry boats that carry passengers to the islands.
At the Marina (marina Zéa), you can admire the prestigious
yachts that come into harbor there, as well as do a little shopping
in one of its many stores, or have a meal in a restaurant. The boat
traffic in the port is almost constant, and the water there is quite
polluted, so wait until you get to the islands to go for a swim...
Behind all the agitation at the port, there is a charming little
neighborhood with open-air fruit and vegetable stands where you
can enjoy a slice of watermelon while you wait for you boat. |

|
To get to Pireus, Take bus 19 from the Airport
(40 minutes), or the subway. To get to the Marina, take bus number
905.
Lodging, you'll find a number of hotels at Pireus
near the subway station. Compare prices and choose the one that
fits into your budget.
Food, you have a few options: A sandwich from
one of the many grocery stores in the area, a real meal in one of
the restaurants or taverns along the pier, with the nicer and more
expensive restaurants being at the Marina. |

Boat Companies
First of all, you have the ferries, which carry impressive quantities
of cars, trucks, merchandise, and human beings...
There are many ferry companies, but you don't need to worry about comparing
prices because they are all the same!
Then there are the faster boats like the hydroplanes ( Flying Dolphin),
which are obviously more expensive. In addition, if the conditions at
sea aren't good, these boats may not be able to make the crossing.
