The Island of SANTORIN
( Cyclades ) |
| Santorin and Mykonos are the two most popular islands in the
Cyclades. Built in 1450 BC, on a former volcano, the island is the
basis for the Atlantis myths in the writings of Plato. |

The sight of the island from afar as you arrive by boat is one
of the most magical and stunning visions that you can have in all
of the Cyclades islands. In addition, the caving in of the center
of the volcano during its successive eruptions created a veritable
geological cross-section on the side of the mountain. Very interesting
for your future little geologists. And just plain beautiful for
everyone else. |
| Many interesting villages to visit: (Oia,
Akrotiri, Perissa, the ruins of ancient Thera).
The capitol of the island, Thera, is a bit too touristy for our
tastes, but is still quite picturesque. |

|
Akrotiri, and its environs with its archeological sites
and its red sand beach are really worth the trip. Also, you should
check out the many little coves and other tiny rocky inlets scattered
here and there on Cape Akrotiri. Perfect for a nice, peaceful swim
all by yourself! |
| Perissa is a little village that just recently opened
itself up to tourism. It is really a very charming place, despite
what certain guide books may say about it. The superette where you'll
do your grocery shopping is all marble inside! We also appreciated
the black sand beach pushed up against a rocky peak. Every Wednesday
at 6 o'clock, a group of old men ring the many bells at the church.
This is a wonderful show both for the ears and the eyes. Prices
in Perissa are quite reasonable. Yet the main attraction
on Santorin is still Oia; a village tucked
away on the cliff of a volcano. Its little streets along the cliff
side and its cave dwellings make Oia a very charming place. Certain
inhabitants have even managed to build swimming pools about a yard
from the side of the cliff. After the Eiffel Tower and Niagara Falls
(one has to think big!), this village has become part of kodak-tourism
iconography.
