Ancient Thera
|
| Located on the island of Santorin,
Thera was a city perched on the mountain top of Perissa. It is now
a city in ruins and an extremely interesting site to discover, not
only for its height (1200 feet above sea level) but also for its
archeological treasures. |
|
|
Occupied, first of all, by the Dorians in the 9th century,
Thera was then controlled by the Egyptians who had found an excellent
spot on the mountain top to keep watch over the Aegean sea. You'll
admire the magnificent bas-reliefs, foundations for dwellings and
the ruins of a Roman theater at the site.
The one thing that has surely not changed for centuries is the superb
view of the mountain and the inland countryside. |
| There are two ways to get there:
- If you're feeling particularly energetic, you'll take the trail
on foot from Perissa. It's really worth the effort because the view
is spectacular. It will take you about an hour.
- You can also get to ancient Thera on the road from Kamari, on
the other side of the mountain.
In both cases, bring a bottle of water with you. A very clever Greek
man sells water at exorbitant prices at the site... |
