The "ROUTE DE LA TRAVERSÉE"
in the heart of Basse-Terre
|
This route cuts straight through Basse-Terre. It is route
number D23. |
 |
The road itself isn't terribly interesting, but it will
take you to a number of very interesting sites. There are a few
views from the road which deserve a picture or two. Écrevisses (crayfish)
falls, is pretty but not necessarily worth your time. The "Maison
de la Forêt" or Forest House is much more interesting and educational.
The house was recently redesigned and remodeled. Don't hesitate
to ask for information. The staff is very nice and extremely competent.
|
|
The Maison de la Forêt will tell you about the birth, the
life and the problems with the ecosystem in Guadeloupe in a very
simple, but educational manner. It is also the departure point for
three trails that wind their way through the tropical vegetation
of the island. One lasts 10 minutes, another 20 and the third, a
half an hour. We recommend the third trail. You'll have the time
to appreciate the tropical forest in all its splendor. |

|
 |
Don't hesitate to go deeper into the forest near Écrevisses
Falls, following along the water's edge. The landscapes around you
are simply sumptuous. You'll see the giant trees (with leaves that
are more than 7 feet long), as well as many multicolored lizards
which constitute the flora and fauna in the forest. |
|
However, never mind the zoological and botanical park. The
park doesn't seem to have the financial means to offer a decent
visit to the people who come there. In other words, it's a rip-off.
