The grand canal is the main thoroughfare through Venice. It is lined with
magnificent palaces, each
one more beautiful than the next.
There are three bridges which cross the grand canal: the ponte Degli
Scalzi, the ponte del Rialto and the ponte del Academia.
When you arrive at the railroad station, take the time to admire the view
of the canal from the ponte Deglis Scalzi. Then hop on a vaporetto to
enjoy all the sights and sounds of the canal, and let yourself fall in
love with Venice (but watch out for pickpockets!)
With
its hotels, restaurants, boutiques, casino and, of course, its gondolas,
the grand canal is THE greatest attraction in Venice. If you buy a "tourist"
pass (good on municipal transportation for three days or more), don't
hesitate to take several tours of the grand canal. Each time you will
see something new. At night, the grand
canal is just as astonishing as it is during the day.
