Italy has 20 regions, two of which are islands: Sicily and Sardinia.

Climate: Italy has a temperate climate and in general temperatures are mild. However, temperatatures vary greatly between seaside regions and mountain regions.

Winters are very mild in Sicily and on the coast around Naples, but very cold in the Alps.

Summers are hot and dry, especially on the coast; a bit milder in the Alps.

Every season has something special to offer in Italy. You can ski in the Winter in the Alps, go to the beach in Summer, and discover its wonderful cities in Autumn and Spring. So choose your season according to what you would to do while you're there. It's best to visit cities like Venice and Rome in September or October. In the summer, it's too hot, too expensive and there are too many tourists!

Emergencies: dial 113 112 from anywhere in Italy for the police.

Post offices: open from 8:30 to 2:00, Monday through Friday, Saturday from 8:30 to 12:00 and the last day of the month.
