The Carnival of Venice |
What would Venice be without its carnival? The Venetians were
probably asking themselves that very question when the government
decided to ban the festival because of the many mishaps that had
taken place during the festivities over the years. The festival
would not "rehabilitated" to its former splendor until
the 1970s. |

In days gone by, the carnival could last as long as six months!
The Republic of Venice permitted all sorts of "naughty"
behavior. Dressed in long capes (tabarro) and the famous masks (bauta),
Venetians were allowed to give in to their every whim. As everyone
was equal (because of their disguises), Venetians did whatever they
pleased, and they did so legally. The perfect occasion for flirting
with ones neighbor, among other things... |
As they were in the past, carnival ceremonies are conducted
according to very strict rules. Then, progressively, the atmosphere
of the festivities becomes less formal. Carnival turns into an exuberant
celebration. And what a party it is! The town becomes the stage
for a giant baroque theater in which everyone has his part to play.
The carnival takes place in mid-February and lasts for a week.
It's a bit sad that it has become so commercial. It has become very
popular with tourists and more and more of them invade the city
every year. Hotels are booked up at least six months in advance.
The only solution is to reserve WELL in advance and to bring a fair
amount of money with you. |
