BOURAIL
On the west coast of the grande terre (main island) |
| Bourail is the Far West of the "grande terre",
the Caldoche capitol. As you visit the area, you'll see the stockmen on
horseback bringing their cattle back to the ranch. |
 |
Located 100 miles from Noumea, Bourail is a large community with 4500
inhabitants.
There are many farmers, but mostly ranchers who have patterned their way
of life after their island neighbors in Australia.
The Néra river, with its very surprising colors, cuts through the town.
Bourail is famous for its rodeos and its Catholic Pilgrimage in the summer.
Just like in the Far West, the town was planned around one main street.
All along the street, you'll find gas stations (just like at home!), shops
and other businesses. |
 |
 |
But what is really special about Bourail can be found
on the coast at the "roche percée" (pierced rock), where you'll
find some incredible geological curiosities and beaches on the lagoon. |
