Jean-Marie TJIBAOU Center
Center for Kanak Art in Noumea
| This establishment provides an overview of Southern
Pacific culture. |
 |
The Jean-Marie Tjibaou center is located north of Noumea. Designed
by the architect Renzon Piano, the architecture of the building
incorporates the same symbolic shapes as the Kanak cabins. The building
is simply magnificent in itself, even before you walk through the
doors.
It's an oceanic cultural exchange center which spreads out over
more than 22,900 square feet. The center is composed of 10 cabins
connected by a central path. You'll find thousands of documents
there: audio, video, photographs, doctoral theses and much more... |
The 10 cabins contain both permanent and temporary exhibitions
which evoke the history, culture and customs of the Kanak people.
The center also hosts festivals, artistic events and welcomes artists
on a regular basis. |

|
 |
The buildings are surrounded by the Kanak path, created by Téa
Kanaké. You'll find all the important symbols that are so dear to
the Kanaks. It is an initiatory path upon which one must open up
his heart and soul to be able to understand the Kanak world and
its spirits.
A visit to the center is a very enriching experience. You will
discover a culture that deserves our respect and understand the
importance of respecting the customs in these islands (among others). |
