LIFOU (Drehu)
Loyalty Islands Archipelago |
| Kanak culture is most present in the islands. Lifou has
the wonderful charm of an island that has managed to preserve its own
traditional authenticity. |
|
 |
You'll stand there awestruck in front of all of its breathtakingly beautiful
views... but we have said that before. Lifou is special in that it has
a number of diversified landscapes.
It's the largest island in the Loyalty archipelago. It covers more than
710 square miles (larger than Tahiti!) and has a population of more than
10,000 charming people. |
The largest town on the island is Wé (east coast), on the banks
of Chateaubriand Bay. The northern coast of the island is made up of high,
steep cliffs. Always remember the tribal custom of asking permission before
you visit or photograph the place. Don't miss Joking Cliffs and the tribe
of the same name (see our article).
From Wé to Mou, on the east coast, you'll admire the island's beautiful
beaches. Luengoni Beach is particularly beautiful with its white sand,
as fine as powder. Just next to the beach, you can spend the night at
Noël Pia's place, one of the chiefs of the tribe, for just a few
pounds! (see article ). |
