Oro Bay on the Isle of Pines (Kunié) |
 |
Oro Bay is one of the main attractions on the Isle of
Pines. From the start you'll feel like you are on another planet in this
very surprising landscape. |
You'll need to prepare
yourself psychologically for this place, because coming back down to earth
can be a difficult experience!
Oro bay is located on the east coast of the Isle of Pines just north
of Upi Bay. It's really very simple... it is one of the most beautiful
places in the world and there is no one around for miles. You'll enjoy
your peace and tranquility on your visit to the bay far away from the
mobs of tourists. There is even a luxury hotel there now, the Meridien,
but it manages to remain very discreet. On the banks of the river, you'll
find places to eat, like Chez Regis, or sleep, Chez Zimako. |
 |
 |
Chez Zimako is really a great deal, the best one we found on our trip. Once
you have reached the end of the path
that leads to the bay, cross the river and find (you may have to look around
for a while) the trail with a sign pointing you in the direction of Zimako's.
Zimako is a local fisherman and you can pitch your tent right on his property
in front of the most beautiful lagoon on earth. You'll feel like you have
reach the end of the earth, you'll be all by yourselves... |
Zimako has a little restaurant where he offers breakfast to tourists.
To the left a bit further down, you'll find the Meridien Hotel.
Don't
miss out on the natural swimming pool formed by two arms of the river.
It is one of the symbols of New Caledonia and you'll see why as soon as
you get there. |
