| The tramway in Lisbon: it's the charm of these brightly
colored vehicles that gives Lisbon all of its authentic appeal. |
 |
The tramways can be classified into three categories: 1. The "old"
tramways, not very spacious, but terribly charming, 2. The newer ones
of modern design, air-conditioned and spacious, and 3. The elevadores
(elevators) which do all the climbing for you. |
| The trams are a great way to see Lisbon. Especially the number 28
line, which takes you through the old parts of the city and leaves you
at the Sao Jorge castle, a terrific trip. Many of the trams go through
the Praca do Comercio. |

The elevadores are just as surprising. Besides the fact that they
are just plain practical, they allow you to climb the steepest streets
without tiring yourself out. They are a fundamental part of the historical
heritage of the city. There are four of them in all.
For example, take the funicular Gloria, from the Praca do Restauradoes,
above the street of Saint Pedro de Alcantara, turn right and you will
get a view of the city which is truly unique. |
| Don't forget the Santa Justa elevator, which merits its own description...
