To be able to withstand a siege, the inhabitants of the region hollowed out the tufa to make hiding places. This ancient tradition created some of the most unique landscapes in the world. At sunset, the play of shadow and light gives the rocks an ochre cast at first, then they become almost purple, giving the place a mysterious and ghostly feeling.
