UNDERGROUND CITIES
To be able to withstand a siege, the inhabitants of the region hollowed
out the tufa to make hiding places. This ancient tradition created some
of the most unique landscapes in the world. At sunset, the play of shadow
and light gives the rocks an ochre cast at first, then they become almost
purple, giving the place a mysterious and ghostly feeling.
Kayseri
The great wooden Ottoman houses, which you can see at Kayseri, are symbolic
of the history of the city and of certain other villages in Cappadocia.
Among the treasures of the region are the numerous monasteries, mausoleums,
mosques, or funerary monuments, which are all worth a visit, especially
the turning tomb of Doner Kumbet. To the east and to the north of Kayseri,
the restored caravanaserais will interest fans of Seljuk architecture.
From Kayseri to Konya the trail follows the "Grand Route", the Uzun Yolu:
the road of ancient caravans loaded down with their bundles. Seljuk
inns still open their doors to passers by, but you will no longer see
the trains of six hundred camels stretching out on the horizon. Only a
few small convoys take to the road and perpetuate the nostalgic traditions
of the caravans. Following the "Grand Route" from Kayseri to Konya is
still quite an unforgettable experience. |
