The Art of Mosaics

Inherited from the Byzantine period, Mosaic art is typical of Byzantium. One can recognize it by the delicacy of its design and by the way light reflects off each piece of marble.

You can see one of the most beautiful examples of this art form in the Saint Sophia Basilica: Christ in the center of the Diesis, from the 10th century.

Unfortunately many mosaics were destroyed by the iconoclasts.

THE ICONOCLASTS

In 726, the emperor Leon III forbid the representation of the human images in art. This caused a great religious crisis pitting the iconoclasts against the defenders of the images. In 798, the display of icons was authorized in churches again.
